Dame's Rocket

Dame’s Rocket – Hesperis matronalis

Field of Dame’s Rocket

This is one of my favorite wildflowers.  There are whole hillsides blooming in northeast Nebraska in the spring.  On an evening drive the air smells so sweet.  It’s Latin name foretells the fact that it is sweeter at night – Hesperis is a Greek word meaning “evening.” Another name for this beautiful plant is Sweet Rocket.

Brought to North America from Europe, as a medicine it was used to induce sweat and as a diuretic.  Maude Grieve’s herbal (1930) states it is used to treat scurvy.
